September 20-21, 2025, TLF welcomed five new waterfowl hunters to a spot in the Lac Du Bonnet area for our first mentored hunt of the season. Mentored hunters, Rachelle, Jen, Angela, Olga, and Tanis, arrived Saturday morning, and we ran thru a full day of "Waterfowl 101" including setting up a simulated hunt scenario complete with stuffed A-frame, decoy spread, and shooting at clay targets. This was followed by a trip to scout fields. This round of "mentees" was SUCH a joy to have, as they were particularly enthusiastic and engaged. The hard work put in during the training was put to good use for the hunt Sunday. Despite drizzly wet conditions the blinds were up and the decoy spread was set a full hour before first light!! The conditions didn't hinder things too much, and the birds came in. The collective effort resulted in two Canadas per mentee to learn how to dress and then turn into whatever future yummy meals they could dream up. And they did! Stew, poppers, and jerky were foods the hunters made after the weekend. Some birds even made it into a second round of educational experience as teaching material for the homeschooled kids of one of our mentored hunters!
